“Recruiting Campaign Going Strong in City. The Samson Ward recruiting meeting was well attended last night, the side lawn of Queen Alexandra School being packed by interested and patriotic citizens. At eight o’clock the local recruits marched on to the grounds preceded by the 15th Regiment Band, and followed by a representation of the school cadets. … The meeting passed off in a very successful manner, and was one to encourage the promoters of the league. …
Mr. F.E. O’Flynn gave an address which was well received. It was a stirring appeal for enlistment and was given in a manner which demonstrated the earnestness of the speaker. … ‘The liberties we now enjoy will go down if we do not all do our duty. Some possibly fail to do their duty because they do not realize the gravity of the situation. The need of enlisting has not gripped our hearts as it should have done. We have got to send out our boys. Husbands, sons, brothers must be given up, and the ladies can do much in this matter.’ …
In concluding his remarks Mr. O’Flynn said the call has come. Give of our means, give our men and our guns. Canadians on the firing line had done and were doing their duty, and Belleville boys were doing their bit. Let us all do our part as loyal Canadians and be true to our country and beloved King. (Loud applause.)”
